River Tern Lodge

      

Nestled in the Western Ghats the River Tern Lodge gets its name from the nearby island that attracts hundreds of river terns during the breeding season. It is located on a hillock on the edge of the Bhadra reservoir, near Lakkavali: a stone’s throw away from the northern boundary of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, in the Chikmaglur district. Chikmaglur was once a princess’ dowry – and still holds the charms of a place that a king’s favourite daughter once took as her dowry. Amongst all this, is a perfect place to form a whole new bond with nature.

Situated in the midst of western ghats of chikmagalur district, surrounded by lofty hill ranges of bababudanagiri, River Tern Lodge is a perfect blend of nature & wildlife. It is located on a hillock, at the pictureseque bhadra river, near lakkavalli and close to bhadra tiger reserve.

Bhadra Tiger Reserve is principally located in Chikkamagaluru district with a small portion being in Bhadravathi taluk of Shivamogga district. In Chikkamagaluru district, it covers portions of Tarikere, Chikkamagaluru and N.R. Pura taluks. The tiger reserve was notified in the year 1999, earlier to which it was a Wildlife Sanctuary notified in the year 1974. The Jagger Valley wildlife park which was declared as early as 1951 was a part of the Sanctuary. The total forest area of the Tiger Reserve is 49,246 hectares. The Tiger Reserve is headed by a Conservator of Forests.

It has two sub-divisions, namely, Chikkamagalur WL and Lakkavalli WL sub-divisions, and consists of four Wildlife Ranges, namely, Hebbe, Lakkavalli, Muthodi and Thanigebylu WL ranges. Forests of the Tiger Reserve is primarily of moist deciduous and semi-evergreen types with evergreen patches in wetter localities towards the west as also in the higher reaches, and dry deciduous forests towards the eastern part of the reserve.

The Tiger Reserve harbors some of the best (quality I/II) moist deciduous Forests of Karnataka, especially in the Muthodi-Lakkavalli region. In the higher reaches of Baba Budan Hills, extensive and rolling grasslands surrounding pockets of shola vegetation are found in the valleys and depressions. Animals found in the Tiger Reserve include tiger, panther, wild dog, elephant, bison, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, sloth bear, wild boar, common langur, bonnet macaque, jackal, varieties of reptiles and birds, etc.

Activities: Wildlife viewing through bhadra tiger reserve, boat ride, water based activities like sailing, kayaking, water cycle, water trampoline, joy fishing are all possible. A few others in the vicinity are visit to tyverekoppa lion & tiger safari and sakkrebyle elephant camp, bird watching, mountain biking.

Season: The River Tern Lodge is a pleasant place to visit throughout the year. June to September finds the entire sanctuary lush and green from the monsoons. Summer months (March – May) might be a little warm.

River lodge is 280 kms from Bangalore

From Bangalore: Drive towards Tumkur. Take the Shimoga bye-pass road at Tumkur (instead of going to Tumkur town) and cross Gubbi, Tiptur, Arsikere, Kadur, Birur, Tarikere. After crossing Tarikere, take the left that also has a Kuvempu University direction board. Travel 14Km till you reach Lakkavalli. At Lakkavalli you will find a sign board to the River Tern Lodge, which is about 4km away. Alternately you can contact the Range Forest Office at Lakkavalli for enquiries. The River Tern Lodge is 38km from Shimoga and is located by the Bhadra Reservoir.

With the soft ripples of the river’s backwaters providing a subtle background score, rest and tranquility are what this experience is about. The River Tern Lodge is a pleasurable experience from the word go! The Bhadra Tiger Reserve is about 4 km from the Lodge. A jeep safari in the evenings offer the opportunity to sight leopards, tigers, gaurs, elephants, crocodiles, deer, wild boars, monitor lizards, etc. Bird-lovers are in for a treat with over 200 species including, grey junglefowl, White rumped shama, Racket tailed drongo, Malabar pied hornbill, Brown fish owl, Grey headed fish eagle, Osprey, White bellied sea eagle, River terns (January to June), Serpent eagle, Crested hawk eagle etc. calling these forests home.

A visit to the Tyverekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari and to the Sakkrebyle Elephant Camp, are also options from the River Tern Lodge. Feel like frolicking in the water a bit? The camp has facilities for kayaking, swimming along with kayaking and boating . All water-based activities are supervised by well-trained experts and adhere to stringent safety guidelines. After a well-spent day, come to the Gol Ghar, the camp’s group dining hall for a dinner that closes the day on a perfect note. The buffet serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare.
